24 hours in Hiroshima
A Day of History and Reflection
In 24 hours, we explored Hiroshima’s rich history, from the emotional Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park to the scenic beauty of Miyajima Island. This day offered a profound blend of reflection, culture, and stunning views, making it a must-visit stop on any Japan trip.
We arrived early in Hiroshima from Kyoto, taking the bullet train, which only took about two hours. After dropping our bags at the hotel, we made our way to Miyajima Island, a short ferry ride from the mainland. The view of the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, seemingly floating in the water, from the ferry was breathtaking.
Miyajima itself is a charming island. While it was a bit touristy when we visited, we thoroughly enjoyed exploring its many temples including Dashō-in, which was absolutely stunning. At the back of the temple grounds lies Daishi Hall, with an artificial cave featuring 88 statues representing the Shikoku pilgrimage, illuminated by hundreds of golden lanterns, and surrounded by statues of monks and a hidden golden vajra. The views from the temples were absolutely gorgeous, and we savored delicious street food from local vendors as we wandered through the island’s streets.
Returning to Hiroshima, we visited the Atomic Bomb Dome, which was incredibly emotional. Standing there was a powerful reminder of the destruction caused by the bombing. We also saw the Children’s Peace Monument—seeing it in person was especially moving, as I had written a school project on it years ago. The Eternal Flame, which will only be extinguished when nuclear weapons no longer exist, is another stark symbol of the devastating impact of war and a reminder of humanity's responsibility to seek peace.
After a reflective day, we enjoyed a lovely dinner and stayed overnight before catching the bullet train to Osaka to finish our trip.
Visiting Hiroshima in just one day provided a meaningful and unforgettable experience, filled with powerful history and beautiful sights. Whether you're exploring the serene temples of Miyajima or reflecting at the Peace Memorial, I highly recommend adding Hiroshima to your itinerary when you're in Japan for a truly unique perspective on the country's past and resilience.
